In this article, SQE2 Prep Module Leader Lisa Morrison talks us through how our SQE2 Prep gets you ready for your SQE2 examinations.

Before joining the College, Lisa spent over 25 years working as a solicitor, qualifying in 1997 and beginning her legal career practising commercial property law in a regional firm in East Anglia before taking up opportunities with top tier firms in Birmingham. She then moved to HM Land Registry working as an in-house solicitor for 15 years. In 2018 Lisa made the move back to private practice with a specialism in property law.

What does the course offer?

There are a lot of components that make up our SQE2 prep, from reading and activities to assessment points. Let’s run through them.Firstly, you’ll get access to our core materials from our SQE1 Prep course as soon as you begin SQE2 Prep. This will be familiar content if you’ve already studied SQE1 with us, but if you’re jumping in at SQE2 having self studied before, it’s great to have a robust bank of knowledge to refer back to.

You’ll also receive a hard copy of our SQE2 Skills Guide, which covers all the key information you’ll need to digest throughout the course. We provide this physical copy as it really is the backbone of your study. Many students like to go through this before they begin the practical modules with us to give them a good background of the academic course components. All other learning material and course information is kept on our Virtual Learning Environment, Canvas.

When it comes to how you study, our students work through over 100 activities in skills practice and simulated assessments. At various juncture points after you have covered a specific topic, you’ll cmplete SQE2 Skills Practices with a tutor. They will then provide you with individual written feedback on how you performed. You will also complete three final skills assessments and receive written feedback, again from the tutor who assessed you.

We make sure you’re exam ready by providing what we call an ‘SQE Ready Review’. This is conducted by personal supervisors with their students and ensures that you do not enter for an exam that you’re not ready for.

How we support you

We don’t simply hand over your course materials and activities, then appear again to assess you! There are multiple touch points along the way throughout your assigned study to ensure you are kept on track, and these take many forms.

Firstly we have our ‘Town Hall’ meetings. You will be invited to these throughout your course, and each is 30 minutes long. These provide high level information, administrative messages and remind you of expectations of your course, deadlines, and assessment dates.

Alongside our Town Hall meetings, we have “Surgeries”. These are actually a series of 10 mini lectures, 2 for each practice area, and cover the trickier elements of each area to give tips on approaching more challenging skills.

We also have supervision sessions in both group and individual form. You’ll attend 2 generalised group supervision sessions of 30 minutes with other members of your course. In these you’ll discuss course structure, expectations, and have the chance to raise any questions with your tutor. There will also be three personal supervision sessions of 15 minutes in which you’ll track your progress, update your tutor on how you’re getting on, and cover any pastoral support needs.

You’ll also have 12 group feedback sessions around assessment dates. After your cohort have submitted a key assessment, tutors will digest the performance of the cohort and give feedback to the group giving general pointers, advice, and information on areas where your cohort struggled. This is kept anonymous and no one will be singled out!

It’s important to note that all of these virtual events happen between the hours of 9 and 5 in the working week. Each meeting is recorded and can be watched at a later date if you have other commitments, bar your individual personal tutoring sessions. Tutors are also always at the end of an email if needed!
