Today we talk with Carla Izabel Da Silva, Commercial Litigation Paralegal at DAC Beachcroft. Carla is currently studying the LLM in Legal Practice with SQE1 and SQE2 prep at The College of Legal Practice, while working full-time.
My background and choosing the LLM in Legal Practice
I’m currently studying the LLM in Legal Practice with SQE1 and SQE2 with The College of Legal Practice. I also work full-time as a commercial litigation paralegal at DAC Beachcroft.
After finishing my LLB in 2021, I was unsure of my next steps. The traditional training contract route seemed a long way off. I wanted a solid legal qualification, and the LLM offered a broader knowledge base alongside SQE preparation. It felt like the perfect way to combine improving my legal knowledge with progressing towards becoming a solicitor.
Why The College of Legal Practice was the right choice for me
I decided to study at the College because their courses are flexible. As a full-time paralegal, working typically 9 to 5 or 9 to 6, I needed a course that could fit around my job. The College's fully online and part-time LLM course was ideal.
I had also experienced online learning during COVID-19, which, though not initially by choice, showed me how effective it could be. I appreciated the convenience of studying from home, saving commute time, and having access to materials whenever I needed them. The College's approach to scheduling seminars during lunch breaks, and recording everything, means I can always stay on track, even with my work commitments.
How the course works for me
My LLM includes SQE1 and SQE2 preparation. The College structures its part-time courses with flexibility in mind, offering a duration of about two years. This pacing is crucial when you're working 15-20 hours of study into a busy week.
The College releases all course materials, deadlines, and content in advance. This allowed me to get a head start during quieter periods, knowing that my workload at the firm would increase later. I’ve found their approach to testing really helpful, especially the MCQs for SQE1. When I get a question wrong, I flag it, identify the topic, and go back to the College’s manual to review that area. This consistent practice is key.
Personalised support and key takeaways
The support from my personal supervisors has been excellent. All College supervisors have practical legal experience, so they understand the realities of legal work. They are always available to help, whether it's through online seminars, information sessions, or one-to-one discussions.
For anyone considering the SQE while working, I'd stress the importance of finding a provider that offers genuine flexibility and understanding. The College of Legal Practice does exactly that. Their online format and supportive tutors have made it possible to pursue my goal of becoming a solicitor while continuing to develop my professional experience.
